The thirty-seventh annual Eurovision Song Contest broadcast from Malmo Isstadion in Malmo, Sweden.Ireland began a streak of victories with Linda Martin singing "Why Me?" Two time Irish winner Johnny Logan proved a lucky charm as he wrote the lyrics for the number. The United Kingdom pulled out all the stops to win sending Michael Ball to sing a pop ballad which was odds on favourite to come first. However the pairing of singer Linda Martin, who came second in 1984, and songwriter Johnny Logan, was enough to win the day.Malta, who had only re-joined the Eurovision family the year before, came a creditable third. The impressive set was built inside the Malmo ice arena with a stage shaped like the bow of a viking ship.It was the last year that Yugoslavia would compete as a nation, as it had already begun to divide into separate countries, some of which would compete the following year.
