The thirty-eighth annual Eurovision Song Contest broadcast from Green Glens Arena in Millstreet, Republic of Ireland.Again it was Ireland's entry which struck a chord with voters, and they won with Niamh Kavanagh singing "In Your Eyes". It was their fifth victory, equalling the record set by France in 1977 and matched by Luxembourg in 1983.It was another disappointment for the United Kingdom who racked up their fourth second place position in six years. It was all decided on the very last points of the evening when the United Kingdom, trailing eleven points behind Ireland waited with baited breath to see who would get the last twelve points and who would get no points at all. In the end it was Ireland's bounty giving them a twenty three point victory.Millstreet, which had a population of just 1,500, was the smallest and most remote host town ever chosen for Eurovision and the town's infrastructure had to be improved significantly in order to accommodate the event. Despite this the contest was still considered a great success.Faced with a massive increase in countries wishing to participate as a result of the fall of the Eastern bloc, the European Broadcasting Union decided to introduce an extra competition round for nations who had never competed before. Hungary, Slovakia, Romania, Estonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Slovenia all battled it out and eventually the latter three ended up with the three coveted spots in the final. This was not seen as a very fair solution and would not last more than a few years.
