The forty-second annual Eurovision Song Contest broadcast from Point Theatre in Dublin, Ireland.Katrina and the Waves won over the voters with "Love Shine a Light" for the United Kingdom. It was a decisive victory with the band receiving points from every country which took part, including five sets of ten points and a record breaking ten sets of the maximum twelve points. It is still regarded as one of the most successful Eurovision songs of all time.It was an end to Ireland's unprecedented victory streak in the 90's although not a complete wash out - they still finished in second place. In another bid to make the selection process fair whilst keeping down the number of entries, the European Broadcasting Union introduced a new system; countries with the lowest average score over the last four years would be excluded from the next contest although they would get automatic re-entry after their year of exclusion. From then on countries with the lowest average score over five years would go through the same elimination process. This year saw a diverse range of entries from Denmark's rap song to Croatia's girl pop act and Sweden's 80s boy band, and for the first time in six years an up-tempo number won.Televoting was trialled in some countries including Austria, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, and the results from these countries were shown to be quite different from those using the traditional jury method - Iceland received 16 out of its 18 points from the televoting countries. The United Kingdom and Ireland also did well from the televotes.
