The forty-fifth annual Eurovision Song Contest broadcast from Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden. The Olsen Brothers sealed a second victory for Denmark with "Fly on the wings of love" despite the Russian delegation's complaints over the use of a vocoder to make one of their voices sound electronic in places, a complaint dismissed by the European Broadcasting Union.Sixteen thousand spectators packed out the arena in what was then the biggest ever venue chosen to host the contest. The contest was streamed online for the first time and due to popular demand an official CD compilation of all the entries was released. A similar release was attempted the year before but failed to incorporate four of the songs.Latvia made their debut in the competition and managed a commendable third place, beating bookies' favourite Estonia into fourth.Politics was on the agenda as always and Israel, who opened the contest, waved Israeli and Syrian flags to promote peace between the two countries. The two male singers also shared a kiss on stage.Meanwhile in the Netherlands, transmission of the event was cut short for continuous news broadcasts after a fireworks disaster in the country earlier that day. It meant Dutch votes had to be cast by a stand-by jury instead of televoters.
