Urban birds
The nice thing about herons is that they aren't rare at all. For such a big bird they are just as much at home in inner city parks as they are in the countryside. The birds find food quite happily along local canals, lakes, rivers and even garden ponds. One of the main reasons people seem to like herons, particularly those in the city is because they seem to symbolise nature co-existing with people. They look as though they ought to nest in remote reedbeds, yet they happily use city park trees to bring up their chicks. Their chicks are so gawky with their daft hairdos, they just make you laugh. Anything against them? They do make a nasty noise, and they will take goldfish out of your garden pond... but which would you rather have?
