Professor Richard Moore-Colyer gives an overview of life in rural Wales in the 1890s.

Living conditions in Tyddyns were squalid and often overcrowded and disease was rife.

Added to this the families were continually worrying about how they could pay their rent which was due to the landowner in the middle of March and again at the end of October. It would have been a very stressful time.

Small holdings would have been two or three acres and much of the work tending the animals and the land would be done by the women and children in the family. They would work in all weathers. It was a dawn to dusk job under very difficult conditions.

The professor feels that the main problems facing the families will be to keep warm, keep fed and keep healthy.
