Plans for Northampton Mosque cause controversy
Plans to convert a disused pub in Northampton into a Mosque have raised a number of objections. Some residents in the Headlands area are worried it could cause traffic and noise problems.
The former pub is surrounded by houses on an estate which doesn't have a large Muslim population. The planning application was submitted to the council by the Gulzar E Madina Welfare Trust, which says Northampton has a large Sunni Muslim population and somewhere big enough for them to worship and hold community events is required, so that they don't have to travel into town to pray.
The group is currently renting space at the Abington community centre where around 70 to 80 people turn up every week.
The organisation hold 3 or 4 events a year where there would be up to 250 people attending the centre.
Far-right party the BNP's been leaf letting the area - some local residents say they didn't know about the plans until they received said leaflet through their doors.
