On the coast of California, the biggest kelp can grow. By mid-summer each plant can grow in length by nearly a metre a day and fully grown they can be over 100m long. Each stem is attached to the sea floor by a small but secure holdfast. These vast marine forests provide sanctuary and hunting grounds for fish and mammals alike. Californian sea otters wrap the kelp around themselves to prevent them drifting out to see while they snooze.
