The Lion's Tale

The lion is the biggest of Africa's big cats. But sometimes even the King of the Beasts can fall on hard times. We follow the fortunes of the Marsh pride and the Big pride.

In this story of two prides of contrasting fortunes, the struggle for survival - even for the King of Beasts - comes sharply into focus. For the Marsh pride, their patch should be one of the finest in East Africa, but it isn't right now. The hungry pride are suffering an unexpected fast, and for their starving cubs it becomes a perilous time.To the north the Big pride weathers the drought far better. With 17 cubs - seven females and three males - their name reflects their status. But success has come at a price: this magnificent pride has given up hunting by day. To avoid conflict with their neighbours - the Masai tribesmen and their herds - they await the cover of darkness. With all those cubs to feed, the hunting lionesses cannot afford to fail, nor can they tolerate the persistent, marauding hyenas intent on stealing the kills. Despite their size, strength and domination, there is no such thing as an easy life.
