Reaction to the death of Bobby Sands in the Republic of Ireland
Mike McKay’s report from Dublin on the reaction to the death of hunger striker Bobby Sands begins outside the General Post Office in O’Connell Street, the historic site of the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin.
Later in the day the report continues from outside the Dáil (the Irish Parliament), where two thousand supporters of the H Block campaign protested against Taoiseach Charles Haughey for not putting enough pressure on the British government to meet the hunger strikers’ demands.
