A UDR soldier is killed and a schoolboy is buried
Brian Walker reports on an IRA ambush on the Rathfriland to Castlewellan road in Co Down in which UDR Lance Corporal Richard McKee, 27, was killed and a colleague injured. The soldiers were in civilian clothes and travelling in an unmarked van to deliver supplies to their camp. The previous year three UDR soldiers (Robert Smith, James Cochrane and Richard Samuel John Wilson) were killed on the same stretch of road.
Walker also reports on the funeral of 15 year old school boy Paul Whitters who died ten days after being hit by a police plastic bullet during a riot in Londonderry. His funeral service was conducted by his great uncle Fr. Frank McLaughlin who appealed to the youth of Derry not to be used. Two other teenagers, James Gary English and James William Brown, were also killed in rioting in Derry that ended six days before.
