INLA kills RUC officer Gary Martin
Brian Walker reports on the death of RUC officer Gary Martin, 28 from Co Down, who was killed at Shaws Road, west Belfast when an INLA booby trap bomb placed in an abandoned lorry exploded while he and three colleagues were searching it. The previous week INLA shot dead Jack Donnelly an Ulster Defence Regiment (UDR) soldier.
Solicitor Pat Finucane gives an update on the worsening condition of Irish Republican Army (IRA) hunger striker Bobby Sands.
Walker then reports on the arrest of 20 republicans under emergency powers and refers to a H-Block demonstration the day before when Bernadette McAliskey nee Devlin warned the crowd that arrests of H-Block organisers would be likely in the days following Sands' death. The report ends with an upbeat assessment on the security situation from Michael Alison Minster of State at the Northern Ireland Office.
