Humphrey Atkins comments on the death of Bobby Sands

The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Humphrey Atkins, makes a statement on the death of IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands.

Atkins states that it is a tragedy that Sands has added his name to the list of those in Northern Ireland who have died as a result of a campaign which can contribute nothing to the solution of the historic and deep rooted problems of the province. He refers to Constable Philip Ellis killed at the junction of Edlingham Street and Duncairn Gardens in north Belfast the previous day noting that his death was not of his own choosing. He concludes by saying that terrorism will produce no dividends and any claims of political justification are bogus.
