Bathed in midnight sun, the expedition crew row through the night across the Wellington Channel to Devon Island – one of the largest uninhabited landmasses on Earth.

The expedition route follows the coasts of some of the most remote islands anywhere in the world, hopping from one island to the next. The first big open-water crossing the team encounters is the Wellington Channel, a notoriously changeable stretch of water known for its squalls and drifting sea ice. They have to cross in one go, rowing in shifts through the night – but in summer at 75 degrees North, the sun never sets.

Sea ice at the North Pole is melting and Jock Wishart is attempting to row the Arctic. Joining him is cyclist Mark Beaumont, on board the tiny boat to film the audacious attempt.
