
The role of women in WW1
On the outbreak of WW1, recruiting stations were swamped by enthusiastic young volunteers in search of a ‘glorious’ adventure. Everyone imagined a quick and heroic war, but the reality was a long and brutal conflict.
The fighting created a huge demand for supplies and a shortage of workers back home. This gave women the opportunity to escape their restricted lives, to take on work in the fields and factories that would have traditionally been done by men.
