By the 1930s, Britain was in the grip of an economic slump. 22% of the population was out of work and the government could no longer afford the dole payments. To try and cut back, the government introduced means testing. This involved sending an inspector to assess how needy each family was before any benefits were paid. However, World War II solved the country鈥檚 unemployment crisis; once again, everyone was needed and rationing ensured everyone had the same amount to eat.
