Where did the cowboys come from?
In the mid-to-late 1800s one of the most significant forms of work was driving cattle. Vast herds of longhorn cows were driven from Texas and many other Southern states to be shipped from Chicago and other centres to the growing cities of the north and eastern USA. The cowboys who drove the cattle have become inextricably linked with popular images of the Wild West and it is easy to forget that being a cowboy was a business proposition, not a film role!
