Why are giant tortoises endangered in the wild? Today they survive in only two places in the world - elsewhere they have been eradicated by man. A baby tortoise is much smaller than an adult and is in danger of being eaten or squashed in the first few years of its life. It can take twenty five years for a youngster to grow to full size. Around 100,000 tortoises remain on Aldabra, which is seven times the population of the Galapagos islands.
