Should the UK government be urging India to stop the death penalty?

Campaigner Parmjit Singh and MP John McDonnell talk about the death penalty in India.

There have been calls to stop the death penalty in India by MPs and campaigners across England. A debate in parliament to urge the UK government to put pressure on India to abolish the death penalty took place on Thursday 28th February.

It came off the back of a petition last year around the planned execution of Balwant Singh Rajoana in India, which saw 118,000 signatures. Also recently there have been two executions in the country after eight years.

But should the UK government and local MPs be involving themselves in Indian affairs?

In this extract we first hear from Parmjit Singh, one of the campaigners from the Kesri Lehar group.

In the second part of the extract we hear from MP John McDonnell, the chair of the Parliamentary Group on the Punjabi community in England. He was also involved in getting the debate to parliament. In the end the motion saw around 70 MPs signing up to it. He talks about why this issue got support and political intervention over others that maybe affecting Asian communities in England...
