IRA members shot in Gibraltar
Three members of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) are shot dead by British military personnel in Gibraltar. Initial reports that the three had just planted a bomb were later discovered to be untrue.
IRA attacks on British targets overseas are not uncommon. They had previously targeted the British Army's HQ in West Germany with a car bomb and killed the British ambassador to the Netherlands outside the embassy at the Hague.
