Topless Jihad Day: British Muslim women speak out against the campaign

Sofia Ahmed, a human rights activist who lives in Manchester, speaks to Ruchi Tandon.

Last week鈥檚 international 'Topless Jihad Day' saw women across the globe protesting outside Tunisian embassies and mosques.

Why? They say it was in support of Amina Tyler, who was threatened with death by stoning by a Tunisian preacher back in March - for a topless photo online, with a protest slogan across her chest. The topless protest was organised by Femen, a Ukrainian feminist group, which Amina is a member of.

But here in England some British Muslim women are saying the action is counter-productive and won鈥檛 help. A facebook campaign has been set up and has seen thousands of likes.

Sofia Ahmed is a human rights activist who lives in Manchester. She set up the online campaign. In this extract she speaks to Desi Download reporter Ruchi Tandon...

FEMEN RESPONSE:
Femen have responded to the criticisms made by the campaign. The Huffington Post UK contacted Femen leader Inna Shevchenko for a response and this is what she had to say:

"They say they are against Femen, but we still say we are here for them.

"They write on their posters that they don't need liberation but in their eyes it's written 'help me'.

"You know, through all history of humanity, all slaves deny that they are slaves.

"We are proud to share progressive ideas for all over the world, all ideologies have the place where they were born but ideology of freedom doesn't have nationality or specific location, it's a universal idea that is shared by Arab women too!

"Why do they have to cover their bodies? This is beginning of the process."
