Bangladesh garment factory fires: Two women fight for justice
Sumi and Kalpona have travelled from Bangladesh to the US.
Two women from Bangladesh have travelled to the US to confront some of the big western retailers. They say things desperately need to change when it comes to working conditions in Bangladesh's garment factories. They鈥檙e calling on the US and Europe for help.
Sumi is 19 years old and has worked in the garment industry for the last five years. She was working at the Tazreen factory in Bangladesh last November when it caught fire. She jumped from the third floor and survived, but over 100 of her co-workers died. She鈥檚 in the US with ex-factory worker Kalpona.
In the first part of this extract Sumi describes the fire and how she escaped. Kalpona translates her words...
In the second part of this extract 36 year old Kalpona talks about how she worked in a factory from the age of 12. She is now the director of the Bangladesh Centre for Workers Solidarity and says she saw evidence of big brands, such as Walmart, in the ashes of the Tazreen fire in November. They now want to speak to those retailers whilst they are in the US.
Back in November after the Tazreen factory fire Walmart said that work had been subcontracted "in direct violation of their policies". They also went on to say in a statement: "The fact that this occurred is extremely troubling to us, and we will continue to work across the apparel industry to improve fire safety education and training in Bangladesh."
