Benn's battle for control of the Labour Party
Supported by the unions, Benn challenged for the Labour leadership during the 1980s. Narrowly defeated in 1981's deputy leadership contest, Benn played a leading role in devising Labour's 1983 election manifesto - dubbed "the longest suicide note in history".
