Pompeii in peril

The ancient city of Pompeii disappeared when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79AD covering the entire city with molten lava. It lay buried until it was rediscovered in 1748.

It has long been an attraction for tourists giving its unique insight into what life was like in Roman times.

But as Fiona Foster reports, it now faces a new threat to its survival. Some of its buildings are collapsing and crumbling away and there are concerns it has been neglected.

The EU has stepped in with money for restoration but will it be enough and can the decline of the ancient city be reversed?
