Diwali candles for Gaurav

As British Hindus across the country celebrate Diwali, for one family this year’s Festival of Light will be very different.

2-year-old Gaurav Bains needs a bone marrow transplant and could develop an aggressive form of childhood leukaemia if he does not find a match. Doctors have said they are looking to do the surgery this December.

His parents Sunny and Gurprit have been appealing for Asian donors to come forward since they found out the news in June, and have been fundraising and campaigning around the country.

There is a critical shortage of bone marrow donors in not only the Asian, but all non-white ethnic communities in the UK.

In this extract Desi Download reporter Ruchi Tandon meets the family to find out how they will be marking Diwali Day. First Gaurav’s mum Gurprit explains how difficult it is for Asians to find a donor match…
