The clip opens at Hadrian鈥檚 Wall and its significance is explained. A replica is shown to demonstrate its size, what it would have looked like and why it was built. It explains who the legionnaires were and what their important role was in the invasion. Bettany Hughes visits the excavation of a fort at Vindolanda museum where she shows what the barracks would have looked like. She also looks at how the soldiers would have lived and even examines the toilets. The role of the fort was to defend themselves against the barbarians and the difference between centurions, legionnaires and auxiliary soldiers is explained. Curator, Justin Blake, shows some of the artefacts discovered, such as shoes, writing tablets and weapons. They go on to examine some of the letters that were discovered written by the soldiers, that tell us what life was really like for them living there.
