Sailmaker - Themes

A light-hearted introduction to the three main themes of "Sailmaker" by Alan Spence; family relationships, social class and religious sectarianism. A narrator, assisted by actors playing the four main roles, explores the nature of father and son relationships and how values and attitudes are passed down through the generations. Billy and Ian represent those who are content with being working class. In contrast, Davie encourages Alec to use his intelligence to break away from his working class roots. That widespread tension between Catholics and Protestants existed in the west of Scotland at this time is explained and the portrayal of sectarianism in the play outlined.
