Vimy Cottage is named in memory of Ernest Henry Amourette, a St Lawrence son killed fighting with the Canadians at the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

Born in Jersey, he had emigrated to Canada and joined up in 1914. Writing home in 1915 he hoped he would be able to visit home but he didn鈥檛 manage that until he had spent over a year on the Western Front with the Second Canadian Expeditionary Force.

Promoted to Sergeant, he was killed by a sniper while attacking German trenches on the first day of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, the most significant battle the Canadians had fought.

His brother Auguste bought the cottage after the war and named it as a memorial to his brother he had grown up nearby.
