The apps to help you find new places

Apps which help you find new places and experiences plus other sites and apps reviewed.

Kate Russell's weekly review of the best apps and websites.

It is thought by 2016 one-third of the planet's seven billion people will be using social media. For a more efficient way to talk to them try Buffer. This publishing tool lets you manage all your key accounts through one simple dashboard, with built-in analytics to help you see which content is most engaging for your followers.

When you do get out and about to live your real life, make sure you do not miss anything important with Field Trip, a location based discovery smartphone app that will send you a push notification when you are in range of something notable.

Another useful smartphone app if you want to know what is around you is World Around Me. The lite version is free and ad supported, using augmented reality to put a label on your camera viewpoint for attractions like restaurants, hotels and other useful amenities.

If you want to get really serious about finding your way about a strange place though, you could hire a local guide. Dopios is a community site that allows travellers to search for local guides by destination, and then filter the results by the kinds of things they like to do.

Next week the world celebrates a good read on 6 March 2014 with World Book Day. The website has loads of fantastic content for readers from nursery to young adults, including online storybooks, reviews and trailers, tips on writing your own fiction, plus advice to help parents and educators find the right reads for their children.

This week's video of the week is from comedy duo Tripp and Tyler and explores in their own hilarious style what a conference call might be like in physical reality. Check out their YouTube channel, Don't Be That Guy Films for more. But be warned, some of their humour leans towards PG certificate.
