Fighting in the trenches
Stefan presents two contrasting experiences of the war. Through a description of machine gun and artillery fire, and a hand to hand clash which resulted in him killing a French soldier he presents a picture of the inhumanity and brutality of war. However, he also remembers the kindness of the British in allowing the Germans to bury their dead after they had repelled a German attack.
