Cyprus: Claire Angelidou
THE HOUSE
by Claire Angelidou
It is fair
That the house exists,
That stone-built house
With its high windows
Through which the sea entered
To wash it at dawn,
Through which swallows entered
To build their nests,
In its high ceilings,
The chirping of birds
The cicadas deepen
Their song
in the branches of the palm tree.
The house with jasmine
And geraniums
The narcissus, the almond tree,
The house on Athens Street
Where the winds descended
And children in shorts
Waited every day
For Spring.
We will always remember
The house,
In its every corner
It hid a secret
And your mother's
Wide smile
Circling our hearts.
The house of Ammohostos.
