Frances Segelman and clay sculpting - inspiration
Greek and Roman art has influenced Frances Segelman in her figurative sculptural artwork. Examples of sculptures by Renaissance artists including Leonardo and Bernini are shown. Frances describes that Michelangelo is her major influence because he was a wonderful artist, a sculptor and a painter who was able to ‘get the person out of the stone’. Images of Michelangelo’s marble carved sculptures are shown as the artist explains how creating movement in something that is static and the use of anatomy. She became obsessed with how fabric is wrapped around the body in a similar way to the muscles. Explanation and visual examples with a 9 foot sculpture of a footballer follow with Frances explaining techniques on how the early sculptors accentuated the muscle using a barley sugar technique.
