Keeping Japan’s bullet trains running like clockwork

It’s 50 years old this year and showing no signs of slowing down – the Shinkansen or bullet train – is one of the world’s busiest high speed trains and reaches speeds of up to 320km per hour.

Around 150 million passengers a year use the network and key to keeping it running on time are its cleaners, who with near-military precision and up to three years of training, prepare each train for departure as Carmen Roberts discovers.
