How to boost your wi-fi signal

The site offering tips on boosting your wi-fi signal and other sites and apps reviewed.

Crowd funding is expected to contribute $65bn to the global economy this year and previously around 10% of funded projects have been in the arts. One such project went live this month - internetopia - a massive web-based drawing experiment in which backers pledged for 鈥渃ubes鈥 at $1 each and then told the artist, Benjamin Redford, what they would like drawn in them.

Not all mobile networks were made equal, which is why RootMetrics is running a crowd sourced project to map the performance of services all over the world, helping you see what kind of connectivity to expect where you live. You can contribute to the project by installing the smartphone apps.

Another connectivity issue is wi-fi performance. Android users can download the free Wi-fi Analyzer app from Farproc to see at a glance how their wireless network is performing, and how many other people in the area are on the same channel. If you live in a built up area you might get better wi-fi speeds if you switch to a less-crowded frequency.

Another quick trick to boost your range involves a little bit of craftwork, as demonstrated on Youtube channel StayAtHomeSingle.

Once you have finished your craft project why not check out the before and after speeds on a site like Speedtest.net - with apps for iPhone and Android too. If you are suffering from a sluggish wi-fi signal you will be astounded by the improvement.

Last year the UK government introduced network filtering regulations requiring mobile and broadband internet service providers to block websites containing illegal or unsuitable content. But according to Open Rights Group the result is one in five websites tested have been blacklisted, many of which are completely legitimate. You can see whether your favourite websites have been affected at blocked.org.uk, where there is also advice on getting your domain unblocked should you need to.
