New app to fight illegal wildlife trade

The trade in rare animals and products has surged in the last decade.

Governments and international agencies are devoting hundreds of millions of dollars to combat the problem but criminal networks have been increasing their activity to cater for rising demand.

At Sydney’s Taronga Zoo efforts are underway to gather a new army of recruits into the fight against trafficking.

In conjunction with the wildlife monitoring trade network Traffic, the zoo has launched a free smartphone app which allows people travelling abroad to report on suspected illegal activity, as Christa Larwood reports.
