Litir 370: Iain Muideartach

Ann an c貌ig ceud deug is ceathrad (1540), chaidh Iain Muideartach, ceann-cinnidh Chlann 鈥檌c Ailein, a chur don phr矛osan. Th脿inig caraid dha, Raghnall Gallta, gu Caisteal Tioram, pr矛omh 脿ros a鈥 chinnidh. Le taic bho na Frisealaich, Clann 鈥檌c Shimidh, bha Raghnall airson 脿ite Iain a ghabhail thairis dha fh猫in.

Bhathar a鈥 c貌caireachd mairt is caoraich airson cuirm dha. Thuirt Raghnall nach leigeadh iad a leas, agus gum biodh cearcan r貌sta math gu le貌r dha. Ghabh muinntir Chlann 鈥檌c Ailein a bheachd gu h-olc agus chuir iad dhachaigh e gu Caisteal 鈥檌c Shimidh faisg air a鈥 Mhanachainn. Bho sin a-mach, 鈥檚 e Raghnall nan Cearc a bh鈥 aig m貌ran air mar ainm.

Rinn Iain Muideartach dol-脿s bhon phr矛osan agus chruinnich e feachd airson stad a chur air Raghnall. Chaidh iarraidh air Iarla Hunndaidh d猫iligeadh ris a鈥 ch貌mhstri as leth an riaghaltais. Chuir e arm ri ch猫ile. Cuide ris bha Frisealaich, Granndaich is buill de Chlann 鈥檌c an T貌isich. Ann am meadhan an t-samhraidh, c貌ig ceud deug, ceathrad 鈥檚 a ceithir (1544), thachair iad ri feachd de Chlann 鈥檌c Ailein agus Camshronaich.

Bha c貌mhradh ann eatarra. Dh鈥檃ontaich iad falbh bho ch猫ile gun sabaid. Rinn Iain air an taobh an iar. Dh鈥檉halbh na Frisealaich tron Ghleann Mh貌r 鈥 an rathad a bu ghiorra gu ruige a鈥 Mhanachainn. Ach thionndaidh Iain is an c貌ig ceud saighdear aige. Chaidh iad gu tuath, gu ceann a tuath Loch L貌chaidh. Bha iad a鈥 feitheamh ris na Frisealaich oir bha Raghnall Gallta nam measg. Bha, agus Mac Shimidh fh猫in.

鈥橲 ann air a鈥 ch貌igeamh latha deug dhen Iuchar a bha am batail. Am-bliadhna bha m矛os an Iuchair uabhasach fh猫in teth ann an Alba. Agus bha e mar sin an uair sin. Teth is grianach. Bha l猫ana m貌r ann aig ceann an locha. Nuair a r脿inig na Frisealaich an t-脿ite sin, th脿inig Clann 鈥檌c Ailein s矛os orra. Bha sabaid mh貌r ann. Bha b脿s uabhasach ann. Chaill na ceudan am beatha. Chaidh Raghnall Gallta a mharbhadh. Chaidh, agus Mac Shimidh. Ged a chaidh Iain Muideartach a le貌n, mhair e be貌.

脌s d猫idh l脿imh bha an l猫ana aig ceann Loch L貌chaidh c貌mhdaichte le cuirp. Bha e c貌mhdaichte cuideachd le l猫intean. Thathar ag r脿dh gun robh an latha cho teth 鈥檚 gun do reub cuid mhath de na saighdearan an l猫intean dhiubh. Agus gur e sin as coireach ri ainm a鈥 bhatail 鈥 Bl脿r na L猫ine. Bha l猫intean nan saighdearan air am f脿gail air a鈥 bhl脿r 脿s d猫idh l脿imh.

Ach tha cuid eile a鈥 cumail a-mach gun do thilg na saighdearan am f猫ilidhean dhiubh is gur e l猫intean a-mh脿in a bh鈥 orra nuair a bha iad a鈥 sabaid 鈥 agus gur e sin as coireach gur e Bl脿r na L猫ine a th鈥 air. Ach mar a thuirt mi an t-seachdain sa chaidh, tha cuid a鈥 cur teagamh anns an d脿 st貌iridh seo 鈥 oir tha Bl脿r na L猫ine a鈥 ciallachadh Field of the Shirt, seach Field of the Shirts.

鈥橲 e an smuain eile gur e Bl脿r na L猫ana an t-ainm ceart 鈥 the Field or Battle of the Swampy Meadow. Uill, b鈥 e sin an 脿rainneachd anns an do thachair e. Ach 鈥 ceist gr脿mair a-rithist. Nach eil am facal l猫ana fireann? Mar sin, 鈥檚 e Bl脿r an L猫ana a bhiodh ann. A, uill, 鈥檚 d貌cha nach eil fuasgladh ann an gr脿mar do cheist mar sin.

Abairtean na Litreach

Abairtean na Litreach: pr矛omh 脿ros a鈥 chinnidh: the clan seat; bhathar a鈥 c貌caireachd mairt is caoraich: cattle and sheep were being cooked; gum biodh cearcan r貌sta math gu le貌r dha: that roast chickens would be good enough for him; ghabh X a bheachd gu h-olc: X were deeply offended by his opinion; faisg air a鈥 Mhanachainn: near Beauly; chruinnich e feachd: he gathered a military force; chaidh iarraidh air Iarla Hunndaidh d猫iligeadh ris a鈥 ch貌mhstri as leth an riaghaltais: the Earl of Huntly was asked to deal with the conflict on behalf of the government; an rathad a bu ghiorra gu ruige: the shortest route to; bha, agus Mac Shimidh fh猫in: as was the Fraser clan chief himself; air a鈥 ch貌igeamh latha deug dhen Iuchar: on the 15th of July; mhair e be貌: he survived; c貌mhdaichte le cuirp: covered with bodies; gun do reub X an l猫intean dhiubh: that X ripped off their shirts; gur e sin as coireach: that is the reason; gur e l猫intean a-mh脿in a bh鈥 orra: that it was only shirts they were wearing; tha cuid a鈥 cur teagamh: some doubt; 鈥檚 d貌cha nach eil fuasgladh ann an gr脿mar: perhaps grammar does not provide a solution.

Puing-ch脿nain na Litreach

Puing-ch脿nain na Litreach: 鈥檚 e Raghnall nan Cearc a bh鈥 aig m貌ran air mar ainm: Many called him 鈥淩anald of the Hens鈥. Have you noticed that you don鈥檛 need to use the verb 鈥渢o name鈥 (ainmich) when talking about a person鈥檚 name or nickname? It鈥檚 enough to use the preposition air, as we say a name is 鈥渙n鈥 someone (d猫 an t-ainm a th鈥 ort?) In the above example I put in the words mar ainm at the end to make it explicit but I need not have. It would have been enough to say, 鈥溾檚 e X a bh鈥 aig m貌ran air鈥 (many called him X). I could even have eliminated 鈥渂h鈥 aig m貌ran鈥 without materially affecting the message ie 鈥檚 e X a bh鈥 air (he was called X). Here are some other examples: 鈥檚 e M脿iri a th鈥 oirre (she is called Mary); 鈥檚 e Ailean a th鈥 orm (my name is Allan); d猫 th鈥 aca air anns a鈥 choimhearsnachd aige fh猫in? (what鈥檚 he called in his own community?)

Gn脿ths-cainnt na Litreach

Gn脿ths-cainnt na Litreach: thuirt Raghnall nach leigeadh iad a leas: Ranald said they didn鈥檛 need to bother. Cha leig thu (a) leas [also cha ruig thu (a) leas] X a dh猫anamh: you don鈥檛 need to do X.
