Litir 269: An G脿idheal as ainmeile a th鈥 ann ann an Coir矛a

C貌 an G脿idheal as ainmeile a th鈥 ann ann an Coir矛a? Seadh 鈥 Coir矛a 鈥 an d霉thaich, a tha sgaraichte ann an d脿 ph脿irt, a tha l脿imh ri ceann a tuath S矛onaidh. Uill, chan urrainn dhomh a鈥 cheist sin a fhreagairt. Ach tha amharas agam gum biodh an t-Urramach Iain Ros nach maireann faisg air mullach na liosta, mura biodh e aig a鈥 mhullach fh猫in. Carson 鈥 uill, thig mi gu sin an ceann greis.

Rugadh Iain Ros ann an taobh sear Siorrachd Rois, faisg air B脿gh an Eig, anns a鈥 bhliadhna ochd ceud deug, ceathrad 鈥檚 a dh脿 (1842). Eadhon aig an 脿m ud bha G脿idhlig aig a鈥 mh貌r-chuid de shluagh na sg矛re sin, agus 鈥檚 e G脿idhlig a-mh脿in a bh鈥 aig Iain nuair a th貌isich e san sgoil ann am Baile a鈥 Chnuic. Ach, mus tigeadh a shaoghal gu cr矛ch, bhiodh e fileanta ann an grunn ch脿nanan eile, S矛onais agus Cor矛anais nam measg.

Bha athair na th脿illear agus bha e cuideachd na bhall de Bh貌rd na Sl脿inte, buidheann a chaidh a chur air chois airson d猫iligeadh ris a鈥 bhuinich-mh貌ir, no cholera. Thathar a鈥 smaoineachadh gun tug tr矛 rudan buaidh air Iain, agus e 貌g. Anns a鈥 chiad dol a-mach, bha a theaghlach an s脿s gu m貌r anns an Eaglais. A bharrachd air sin, bhiodh Iain a鈥 faicinn soithichean a鈥 tighinn is a鈥 falbh gu gach 脿ird, is bhiodh sin a鈥 toirt air smaoineachadh mun t-saoghal mh貌r. Agus bha e air a chuairteachadh le 脿iteachan a bha muinntir an 脿ite a鈥 comharrachadh mar co-cheangailte ris na s矛thichean. Ged nach robh e fh猫in air an aon r脿mh a thaobh rudan os-n脿darrach, thuigeadh e mar a bhiodh daoine a bha a鈥 fuireach ann an sg矛rean d霉thchail a鈥 coimhead air an t-saoghal.

Anns na seasgadan, dh鈥檉halbh e a Ghlaschu far an do rinn e ceum san oilthigh. An uair sin chaidh e a-steach don Mhinistrealachd ann an Talla Dhiadhaireach nan Cl猫ireach Aonaichte ann an D霉n 脠ideann. Bha 霉idh aige ann a bhith a鈥 falbh a-null thairis airson a bhith na mhiseanaraidh, agus thuirt am fear a bha os cionn B貌rd Misean C猫in na h-Eaglaise gum biodh an d脿rna cuid Na h-脤nnseachan no S矛ona freagarrach dha. Bha am B貌rd air aithneachadh gu robh sgilean c脿nain air leth aige.

Ach bha tarraing eile air 鈥 a dhachaigh. Bha Iain gu math measail air a鈥 Gh脿idhealtachd agus bha b貌rd eile dhen Eaglais 鈥 B貌rd Misean na Dachaigh 鈥 dhen bheachd gum bu ch貌ir dha tilleadh don Gh脿idhealtachd. Eadhon aig an 脿m ud bha gainnead ann de mhinistearan aig an robh comas searmonachadh ann an G脿idhlig.

Chaidh Iain a dh鈥橧nbhir Nis is an uair sin a Phort R矛gh. Ach cha robh e toilichte san Eilean Sgitheanach agus dh鈥檌arr e air an Eaglais a ghluasad a Ste貌rnabhagh. Eadhon ann an Le貌dhas, ge-t脿, cha robh e riaraichte, agus sgr矛obh e a-rithist gu B貌rd a鈥 Mhisein Ch猫in, ag iarraidh orra a chur a-null a Sh矛onaidh. Sgr矛obh Cathraiche a鈥 Bh霉ird, an Dotair Uilleam MacGill, ris gum biodh e na b鈥 fhe脿rr dha a bhith 鈥渘a shradag misein [thall thairis] na lasair ann an Ros an Ear鈥.

Anns a鈥 Ghearran ochd ceud deug, seachdad 鈥檚 a dh脿 (1872) fhuair e cead dhol a Sh矛onaidh. Goirid mus do dh鈥檉halbh e, ph貌s e, agus e a-nise trithead bliadhna a dh鈥檃ois. Aig an toiseach chaidh e gu ruige Chefoo (air a bheil Yantai an-diugh), air a鈥 chosta mu choinneimh Choir矛a, far an robh miseanaraidhean eile. Cha b鈥 fhada gus an robh e a鈥 coimhead airson 脿ite 霉r dha fh猫in, ge-t脿. Innsidh mi dhuibh mar a choisinn e cli霉 mh貌r dha fh猫in ann am Manchuria is Coir矛a an ath-sheachdain.

Puing-ghr脿mair na seachdaine

Puing-ghr脿mair na seachdaine: 鈥橲 e G脿idhlig a-mh脿in a bh鈥 aig Iain nuair a th貌isich e san sgoil: it was only Gaelic that Iain spoke when he started school. I want to reiterate a very basic point this week 鈥 that is, the proper idiomatic way to say that somebody speaks a language, in this case Gaelic. We say in Gaelic that 鈥渉e has鈥 the language, not that 鈥渉e speaks鈥 it. I sometimes hear learners say of another 鈥 鈥渁m bi e a鈥 bruidhinn G脿idhlig?鈥 (meaning 鈥渄oes he speak Gaelic鈥) when they should say 鈥渁 bheil G脿idhlig aige?鈥 No verb to 鈥渟peak鈥 appears 鈥 all we need is the verb 鈥渢o be鈥 and one of the prepositional pronouns associated with aig. Here is an example of how you might use both in the one sentence: tha Fraingis aige ach bidh e a鈥 bruidhinn Gearmailtis ri bhean (he has/speaks French but he speaks German to his wife). Or: tha G脿idhlig agam nuair a tha mi nam chadal, ged nach bruidhinn mi i ach nuair a tha mi nam dh霉isg: I 鈥渉ave鈥 Gaelic when I am asleep although I only speak it when I am awake.

Gn脿ths-cainnt na seachdaine

Gn脿ths-cainnt na seachdaine: goirid mus do dh鈥檉halbh e: shortly before he left. Goirid mus do rinn X Y: shortly before X did Y.
