Can the Ebola outbreak be stopped?

Untested drugs can be used to treat patients infected with the Ebola virus, the World Health Organization says, although officials have warned there are very limited supplies of potential treatments.

Last week the WHO declared the Ebola outbreak was a global health emergency - more than 1,000 people have died in West Africa this year.

So could the disease be prevented and even cured? Well, in labs thousands of miles away from the outbreak, vaccines and treatments have been shown to cure Ebola in non-human primates.

They’ve been developed by Thomas Geisbert, a Professor of Microbiology & Immunology at the University of Texas. He’s worked with the virus for over 25 years and in this extract he speaks to UK Black’s Ruchi Tandon…
