Exploring the Northwest Passage

The Northwest Passage is a sea corridor through Canada's Arctic archipelago and along the northern coast of North America linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

For centuries, explorers tried to find a navigable sea route through it.

But it wasn't until the last century that a ship first managed to sail non-stop through the ice that blocked the route for much of the year.

Karen Bowerman took a voyage along the passage to find out why it has been such a challenge.
