Tackling an Epidemic
Why is the Ebola outbreak having less of an impact on the economy of West Africa than you might expect? And, a breakthrough in the treatment of HIV in children.
We hear how Ebola has taken a terrible toll on the tourist trade in Gambia but that it is, nevertheless, having less effect on the wider economy of West Africa than you might expect. Emanuele Santi, chief regional economist at the African Development Bank explains. Ebola is a truly horrific illness but the scale of the outbreak is still tiny compared to that of an earlier epidemic - that of AIDS and we have got news of a breakthrough in the treatment of the disease in children in the developing world. Greg Perry of Medicines Patents Pool works with the big pharmaceuticals to bring cut price HIV drugs to developing countries and has just done a deal to produce cheap generic drugs. And Lucy Kellaway of the Financial Times, on making time for coffee with strangers.
