Gloria Hunniford's Lifeline Appeal for Grandparents Plus

Gloria Hunniford makes an appeal on behalf of Grandparents Plus, a charity that supports grandparents who take on the full-time care of their grandchildren.

Broadcaster Gloria Hunniford makes an appeal on behalf of Grandparents Plus, a charity that supports grandparents who take on the full-time care of their grandchildren, often in very difficult circumstances. It's an experience that Gloria has much sympathy with, because when she lost her daughter Caron Keeting to breast cancer, Gloria felt responsible for helping to care for Caron's two boys in any way she could.

The film features Pat and Ivor. Aged 77 and 85, they stepped in to raise their daughter's children when severe depression left her unable to cope with parenthood. Faced with the option of the children going in to care, Pat and Ivor didn't hesitate to take them in. However, they soon found they were struggling financially, and were bewildered by the legal maze they had to negotiate to become legal guardians - as well as having to cope with the many challenges of parenting at their advanced age. They talk about how the skilled staff at Grandparents Plus gave them the confidence to carry on by giving them vital support when they needed it most, as well as practical advice that meant they now have a firm financial footing for the future.
