Transplant first: Doctor describes first organ donation from UK newborn

In a procedure described as a milestone in neonatal care, a six-day-old baby girl's kidneys and liver cells have been given to two separate recipients after her heart stopped beating.

A medical team at London's Hammersmith Hospital performed the transplant of the organs from a tiny baby after her parents agreed to her kidneys and liver cells being given to two other recipients.

Dr Gaurav Atreja told Today it was the first time he had approached a newborn's parents under such circumstances: "The parents were brave and courageous. They showed their keenness and came back very quickly" to agree to the transplant.
