Northern Lights from the northern hemisphere

There has been an unexpected strong auroral storm overnight, meaning people across the Northern Hemisphere have been enjoying the display of the Northern Lights.

The phenomenon is caused by eruptions on the surface of the sun, and the storm hit 4 on a 1-5 scale.

People from Oxford to North America have described what they saw and have sent in their photos.

Adrian found the sights very moving:

鈥淚 got quite excited because I know this is extremely rare for the south of England. I鈥檓 on the Oxfordshire, West Berkshire border. You usually have to travel to Norway or Iceland to see this sort of thing鈥, he said.

Matthew viewed the aurora from Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

鈥淲e鈥檝e been seeing a banding across the Northern horizon, a big green arc, really brilliant colours鈥.
