Easter

Nathan from Liverpool (11) and Lara from Jerusalem (13) show what is spiritual and good for them about Easter. Similarities between Catholics and Anglicans become clear.

Nathan (11) and Lara (13) show us what Easter is like for them, and what it means. The festival of Easter is central to Christian belief because it is the Resurrection day, when Jesus was raised from the grave, alive again. This is why Christians believe in life after death. The resurrection shows God’s power of love is stronger than death.
Nathan gets up early on Easter Sunday morning because his church has a fire lighting service of worship in the early morning. But in a way, the festival begins earlier, on ‘Good Friday’ when Christians remember Jesus’ path to the cross. In Jerusalem Lara can touch a stone which Jesus may have touched on his way to the cross, as pilgrims do in their thousands. Back in Liverpool, Nathan walks the ‘Stations of the Cross’ in his church using some works of art to remind him of Jesus’ last journey. There are usually 14 ‘stations’ or stopping points to remember on Good Friday. He also makes Hot Crossed Buns. The sadness of Good Friday gives way to the excitement of new life. Easter eggs, which symbolise new life, are a sign that Jesus rose from death. As the chick breaks out of its shell to new life, so Jesus broke out of the grave to new life. Nathan says ‘they are also delicious.’
