Doreen Groom’s Story
Doreen, born in 1937, was at home with her disabled mother in Ely on VE Day.
Her father was serving in the army. She didn’t see him until January 1946.
On VE night there was a dance on the Market Square in Ely where everyone gathered. She felt happy that the war was over; there was relief there would be no more bombing.
Doreen’s mum got some red, white and blue ribbon and nailed ‘VE’ in ribbon to the front of the house.
Doreen now lives in her mother’s house.
