Edith Fleet鈥檚 Story
Edith Fleet (nee Sharpe) lives in Abington. She was fourteen on VE Day and was working in Abingdon as a domestic. She lived with her family on the land settlement about a mile and a half from the village after coming down from Leeds.
As the news of victory in Europe broke Edith had no idea as she was at work. The lady of the house went into labour and Edith assisted the nurse in delivering a baby boy much to her mother鈥檚 horror.
Celebrations took place in the village and Edith and her sister hung flags from the windows but they were not invited to the village celebration; they had felt outcasts since moving down from Leeds.
On the actual night Edith recalls how her mum made a cake and they just sat around and chatted.
The only bonus was that the families rations were delivered as usual but they were given the wrong box which had many black market items in which they enjoyed on VE night.
