Liz worked in the forces during the war, volunteering from the age of 17. She recalls VE Day, which she spent in Brighton whilst being stationed in Horsham.

鈥淓verybody in Brighton was absolutely thrilled to bits鈥� people were leaping around shouting and excited鈥� we couldn鈥檛 stay very long because we had to get back to Horsham where we were stationed鈥�

Days before VE Day was announced Liz and her colleagues were sent on a training course.

When the news came that the war was over, the course was disbanded and they were given the day off. Liz and a few members decided to hitch a lift to Brighton to spend VE Day there.

On the journey, they came across South Africans troops: 鈥淭hey were anxious to get home, which was obviously a lot further away for them than us.鈥�

Working for the forces during the war, there were times where her and the rest of the unit waited eagerly for an announcement that war was finally over only to be disappointed and told that the war was still ongoing.
