Exclusive: Last UK Guantanamo detainee could be freed
A British resident who has been held in Guantanamo Bay for 13 years without trial or charge could be released in weeks, his lawyer has told the Victoria Derbyshire programme.
Shaker Aamer, a Saudi citizen and father of four, has been cleared for release twice since 2007, by both President Bush and President Obama, but has remained in the detention centre.
In an exclusive interview, his lawyer, Clive Stafford-Smith, told Victoria that US government officials have told him Shaker could be released in June.
He was joined on the programme by the MP Andrew Mitchell, who has also worked for Shaker’s release.
