Ex-sports minister, David Mellor, said Fifa president, Sepp Blatter "and his shambolic regime, will have to go" following the arrests of seven high ranking Fifa officials.

Fifa's presidential election will still take place on Friday as planned, despite the arrests in Zurich this morning and the launch of a Swiss criminal case into the bids for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, to be held in Russia and Qatar respectively.

Mr Mellor, who is also the former football task force chair, said it takes "absurdity of unrivalled lengths" to carry on with the Fifa presidential election as planned.

He believes sports ministers across the world must "step in and re-organise" Fifa in order to get rid of alleged corruption within Blatter's "monstrous and scandalous" regime.

Previously, Fifa spokesman Walter De Gregorio said news of the arrests was "welcome" and showed the organisation was "on the right track". He insisted that Sepp Blatter was not involved in the allegations.
