‘Our baby was wrongly removed by social services’

A couple whose baby girl was wrongly taken away from them when she was one month old have called for an inquiry into the case.

In 2013, Thurrock council took Misty Barnes into care at 30 days, saying it believed there could be a risk of violence to her and her parents, Jack Barnes and Cheryll Rich, in the local area. Misty was in foster care for nine months, with social services preparing to put her up for adoption.

But official documents included a number of factual errors, including accusing Jack of being a suspected terrorist.

A judge eventually threw the case out and the family was offered compensation by the council, which they rejected.

Jack and Cheryll spoke to Victoria about why they feel justice is not being done.
